Darren Millar MS has spoken of the benefit of politicians engaging with school children, referring to a recent visit he made to a school in Llysfaen.
In October, Darren took part in the Digital Dialogue: Wales programme, delivered by the Politics Project, which works across the UK to connect schools and young people with their elected representatives through video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Teams.
Darren zoomed in to Ysgol Cynfran in Llysfaen and was asked an array of interesting questions by pupils.
In last week's meeting in the Senedd, he referred to his visit when asking the Cabinet Secretary for Education what funding the Welsh Government is making available to support these engagement projects going forward.
He said:
“Many Members of this Senedd will have engaged with schools through the Politics Project and the digital dialogue programme. I recently enjoyed a fantastic session with pupils in Ysgol Cynfran in Llysfaen in my constituency.
“But of course, those sessions give the opportunity for those young people to understand better the Senedd, understand what we do in this place and the decisions that we make that impact them, and I was really impressed at the way that they engaged.
“They asked very sensible questions on education funding, on climate change, and a whole host of other subjects. What funding is the Welsh Government making available to support those projects on an ongoing basis? These were primary school children, so some time to go before they get to voting age, but clearly the sooner we can engage people, the better.”
The Cabinet Secretary agreed that “the sooner we can engage people the better”, and thanked Darren for his positive words about the Politics Project and the digital dialogue programme.
