Clwyd West MS Darren Millar celebrated Scouting last week when he handed out awards to 6th Colwyn Bay Scout Group.
Darren attended the special presentation at Gwrych Castle in Abergele last Sunday.
He said:
“It was an absolute pleasure to attend this event in the glorious sunshine and to hand out awards to the group.
“I was a Scout myself in my teens, I was leader of Kingfisher patrol in the 1st Abergele St Michael's Scout Group, so I am aware of all the benefits of being a Scout.
“Not only does it help young people develop various skills, values, and interests that influence their personal and social growth, Scouting also offers fun, adventure, and service opportunities that expose young people to different experiences and people, and can increase faith, family recreation, physical health, citizenship, independence, self-confidence, ethics, leadership, cooperation, and more.
“The 6th Colwyn Bay Scout Group is only a small troop, but they are a great bunch and I enjoyed spending time with them and presenting them with their awards.”
The night before the presentation event, the group completed their Scouts Cymru Bronze Dragon Award by sleeping in ‘the clink’, the dark and dunk second camp used in the 2021 season of I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!
Group Scout Leader of 6th Colwyn Bay Scout Group, Ro Brett, said:
“Last year my Scouts decided that they would like to try and attain the Scouts Cymru Bronze Dragon Award. This involves camping out one night once a month for a year. We managed to achieve this within a year although it has been hard at times.
“About six months ago myself and the Scout Leader Mike Smith started planning something special for our group, and thanks to the generosity of Gwrych Castle it really was a night to remember.
“We started the day with a hike from Porth Eirias to Abergele, along the way doing a treasure hunt. This ended at the Police Station in Abergele whereon the scouts were blindfolded and lead on a rope by one of my beavers to the castle into ‘The Clink’. All the scouts were so happy and thought it was amazing to spend the night at Gwrych Castle."
“Sunday was a celebration of the newly formed Colwyn Bay and Abergele District which consists of 6th Colwyn Bay Scout Group and 1st Abergele (St Michael’s), and we are pleased Darren was able to attend to hand out the awards.”
Volunteers are needed to help out at 6th Colwyn Bay Scout Group. Anyone interested should email Ro Brett at [email protected].
