Clwyd West Member of the Welsh Parliament and Chair of the Cross Party Group on the Armed Forces and Cadets, Darren Millar MS, has welcomed news that veterans from Wales from today can benefit from an initiative which will help them find a job in the civil service.
The ‘Great Place to Work for Veterans’ initiative, was recently launched by the Office for Veterans’ Affairs in the UK Cabinet Office, and is designed to encourage more veterans to join the civil service when they leave the Armed Forces, ensuring the civil service benefits from the wide-range skills and talents in the Armed Forces community.
At the weekend the Welsh Government announced that they will be joining the initiative, which means that from today (November 9th) veterans from Wales can now be involved.
Welcoming the news, Darren said:
“This is a fantastic initiative and I am delighted that the Welsh Government has decided to join it.
“Leaving the Armed Forces can be particularly challenging for veterans who often find it difficult to settle into civilian life and find a job. As well as benefiting the civil service, this initiative also boosts the employment prospects of people who have served, helping them to advance their careers beyond the Armed Forces.
“Many veterans already work in the public sector and contribute a huge amount to the organisation; this initiative will encourage more veterans to take this step.”
To be eligible for this scheme in the civil service, you must:
- have served for at least one year in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (as a Regular or Reserve); this includes time spent training
- be in transition from, or ceased to be a member of, HM Armed Forces
- not already be a civil servant, or be employed by a Civil Service Commission accredited public body
There is no maximum time limit from when you left HM Armed Forces to be eligible for this initiative.
