Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed news that a school in his constituency has received a significant funding grant to create a new community hockey club.
Hoci Cymru recently announced funding from the organisation and Sport Wales for Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay aimed at enhancing community engagement through the sport of hockey.
The funding will be allocated towards the development and enhancement of the astro turf and hockey facilities, enabling greater access for both local sporting teams and the wider community. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote inclusive participation in sports, particularly among young people and local residents.
Welcoming the news, Darren, who recently paid a visit to the school, said:
“This is fantastic news for Rydal Penrhos and indeed the wider community, which will also benefit from these new facilities.
“Sport is a vital part of the school curriculum, teaching children many life-long skills, such as communication and team-building, as well as keeping them fit. This funding grant will enable Rydal Penrhos to build on their already impressive sporting facilities, providing further opportunities for their pupils.
“As the Principal, Tom Hutchinson, has said, it will also create a lasting legacy for the community, directly benefitting local clubs like Eirias Hockey Club.”
Darren added:
“I was particularly pleased to hear that in conjunction with Hoci Cymru and local sporting teams, the school now plans to host a series of community outreach programs, including coaching clinics, open hockey days, and workshops aimed at encouraging participation among individuals of all ages and skill levels, enhancing sporting skills and also fostering a sense of community cohesion and teamwork.
“I congratulate the school on being awarded the grant and look forward to seeing the new facilities during a future visit.”
