Clwyd West MS Darren Millar is thrilled by news that Ruthin has been confirmed as the preferred location for the new Welsh Cycling North Wales Velodrome.
Welsh Cycling have confirmed their selection of Glasdir in Ruthin as the location for a proposed North Wales Outdoor Velodrome as a result of the efforts of Ruthin Town Council.
The plans will now progress to the next stages including discussions with Denbighshire County Council on adopting the vacant site, consulting with the local community on ideas for a landscaped parkland velodrome, developing the operational model with stakeholders and more detailed proposals and costings.
Welcoming the news, Darren said:
“This is absolutely fantastic news for not only Ruthin but also the wider North Wales community so I’m delighted that the Town Council have worked so hard to get to this stage. The project will really help to put Denbighshire firmly on the map and be a bonanza for the local economy.
“This part of Wales already attracts a high number of keen cyclists and having the North Wales Velodrome here will ensure Ruthin becomes a central hub for cycling in the locality, building on the fantastic cycling facilities elsewhere in Denbighshire, including OnePlanet Adventure MTB tracks at Coed Llandegla and Marsh tracks in Rhyl.
“Currently cyclists in North Wales wanting to use a Velodrome have to travel to Manchester or South Wales, so they will be delighted at the prospect of a state of the art facility on their doorstep.
“However, it must be stressed that this facility will not just be for the experienced cyclists, as it will be a community focussed centre with a programme of use that will provide opportunities for all sectors of the community covering road safety training, primary and high school pupils, young adults, inclusive cycling and wheeled activities for the disabled as well as over 60+ active cycling opportunities.
“I look forward to the plans progressing and hopefully visiting a North Wales Velodrome in Clwyd West in the not too distant future.”
