Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has blasted the First Minister’s slow approach in rolling out the Covid-19 vaccine and warned that it will cost lives.
Speaking on Radio 4 today, the First Minister said that Wales is not using all its available Pfizer vaccine to vaccinate people as quickly as possible and give them increased safety against the virus because he does not want to leave vaccinators "standing around with nothing to do" for weeks.
The First Minister revealed that Wales would not receive any further Pfizer supplies until February, and so the vaccinations would be spread throughout the next few weeks rather than use them all up as fast as possible.
Darren has described his approach as alarming and said lives will inevitably be lost as a result.
He said:
“The First Minister’s approach is quite frankly ludicrous. Surely the priority should be getting as many people vaccinated in the shortest amount of time, not spreading the vaccines out over weeks.
“If we have any chance of reducing death rates from this awful virus, then people need to be vaccinated now. It is better to have vaccinators “standing around” in weeks to come and more people vaccinated, than people desperately waiting weeks for the jab just because Mark Drakeford want to spread the workload.
“The lack of urgency on vaccine rollout from the First Minister is alarming and will cost lives.
“It's time to stop plodding, start sprinting, and protect vulnerable people in Wales as soon as possible.”
