Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed news that residents living in one part of Colwyn Bay will soon take part in the nations first deposit return scheme (DRS).
The area has been selected for a four-week trial of DRS, which rewards consumers with cash for recycling single-use containers such as plastic bottles.
It is a joint pilot between the Welsh Government, Conwy Council and Wrap Cymru, and uses Polytag technology, which negates the need to return the containers in person.
Welcoming the news, Darren said:
“I am absolutely delighted that Conwy County has been chosen to take part in this exciting pilot for a new digital method of tracking recycling.
“The four-week trial will involve a number of homes in the Colwyn Heights area and is due to start in the spring. Householders will be provided with a set of bottles tagged by Polytag, which they will scan when placing in their recycling containers, using an app.
“The bottles will also be scanned upon collection by Conwy County Borough Council’s household waste recycling team. For each bottle scanned at either end of the DRS process, householders will receive a digital token – with each token worth 20p. I was pleased to hear that the tokens will then be donated to raise funds for Ysgol Pen y Bryn.”
Darren added:
“This scheme marks another step forward in the fight against plastic waste and will play an instrument role in helping Wales on its route to a zero-waste, circular economy. I hope it is a great success and can be rolled out across the rest on my constituency, and indeed the rest of Wales, in the not too distant future.”
