Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed news that Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water has selected Abergele to receive Wales’ first install of smarter meters, as part of their investment to reduce leakage and encourage all customers to become more water conscious.
This means Abergele will receive new technology to improve water services, tackling water wastage which is important for safeguarding the environment.
The project forms part of Welsh Water’s water resilience strategy, saving water through supporting customers to save money and water. The insight gained from the from the rollout in Abergele will help identify and fix leaks faster than ever before whilst providing customers with a better understanding of their water use.
As the first of its kind ‘test hub’, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water will be able to fix leaks and build a picture of where improvements on their network need to be made to ensure high quality services can be supplied now and for generations to come.
Abergele has been selected as the first town to become a smart water hub as over 75% of customers in this town already have water meters meaning that customers in the area already understand the importance of saving water.
Welsh Water will also be supporting local community driven initiatives to help reduce these groups become more water efficient. The not-for-profit organisation will also provide the town with water butt installations to maximise water saving potential.

The investment will not only help the company to detect water leaks in the area which means they can be repaired sooner reducing the amount of water lost but will also help customers find leaks on their private system which can be resolved quicker. The team are doing a great job installing these innovative meters and it’s great to see residents in the area embracing the new technology.”
