Clwyd West MS Darren Millar is impressed by a community café in his constituency which uses surplus foods from local businesses to create tasty, affordable meals.
Darren visited the ‘From the Earth’ café (formerly Seconds café) last week to meet with Founder/Director Janine Cusworth and team, along with Cllr Anne Roberts, Mayor of Ruthin.
Situated on Well Street, the café, operated by ReSource, has been running for nearly four months.
Darren said:
“I was delighted to visit this café last week and to learn more about how they operate.
“There is so much food waste these days and I was pleased to hear that they are making use of it by utilising surplus food donated by local businesses to create tasty, affordable meals for the local community.
“The menu changes depending on what’s donated and they aim to keep costs low. They also have an initiative where people can pay less if they cannot afford a particular meal, and people can pay more if they are able to.
“On the day that I visited they also had flowers which were donated by Tesco outside which were free for people to take. They also have toys for children and host small events during half terms etc to bring the local community together.
“The project is operated by ReSource, who run a number of other schemes in and around the Ruthin area, including a Borrow Bus which travels around and a community garden/orchard in Denbigh.
“The food looked wonderful, and I thoroughly enjoyed my cuppa and delicious scone.
“Janine and the team are doing an excellent job and I encourage people to visit.”
Cllr Anne Roberts said:
“Since Janine and her team came to Ruthin to set up Resource on St Peter's Square, and, more recently, the 'From the Earth' cafe at Crown House, she has provided a different offering for local people. The emphasis on re-usage, re-cycling and cutting down on waste is really helping families at a time when we are all struggling in one way or another.
"I would like to wish them every success in this venture, and in the numerous projects they are involved with.”
