Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed news that flood defence works in Kinmel Bay will be carried out this financial year.
Darren has long been calling for improvements to the defences in Kinmel Bay and is therefore delighted that Conwy County Council have now been given the greenlight to go ahead with the works.
The Local Authority expect work to start at the end of September.
Welcoming the news, Darren said:
“These defences are much needed and something I have long been calling for.
“Whilst we cannot prevent extreme weather conditions, we should be able to reduce risk of flooding to existing homes and businesses through a combination of flood defence improvements and efficient flood warning systems.
“My family home was hit by the Towyn floods on February 26th 1990, so I know how devastating flooding can be.
“These new defences will help ensure that those living in Kinmel Bay never face that the heartache that those whose homes were destroyed in 1990 did.”
Darren has previously called for assurances that the new defences will be visually appealing,
He added:
“As I have previously said, it is vital that these defences not only improve flood protection but also enhance the coastline, improve access to our local beaches, and make Kinmel Bay more attractive for locals and visitors alike, so that they can achieve Blue flag status once the works are completed.
“Kinmel Bay is a popular visitor location and the beach here is also regularly used by the locals. It is therefore vital that the flood defence works serve to improve the area as a whole. I look forward to work starting in September.”
