Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has criticised the Labour Welsh Government for ditching a planned road project which would have eased traffic congestion in Abergele’s busy town centre.
Yesterday the Welsh Government published the final report of the independent Roads Review and a number of schemes which were due to be carried out across Wales have been scrapped, including Abergele Town Centre Congestion Scheme.
Criticising the decision in yesterday’s meeting of the Welsh Parliament and urging Ministers to reconsider, Darren said:
“There are three schemes that are referred to in my constituency in the roads review report, all of which are going to be scrapped.
“These are schemes which are desperately needed, and everybody was being prepared for the work.
“Abergele is a town that is facing congestion on a daily basis, not just in the summer months, when it's very acute because of the visitors that we receive, but every single day of the week.
“So, I would challenge you, Minister: come with me to my constituency. I'll give you a tour and you can see for yourself the problems that your decision will now leave unaddressed. I want you to see first-hand, for yourself, why scrapping these schemes doesn't make any sense.”
Speaking after the meeting, Darren added:
“It is extremely concerning that Welsh Government Ministers do not class the problems my constituents in Abergele face each day as important.
“After years of suffering, residents were hopeful that the issues were finally going to be addressed, only for the Welsh Government to go back on its promise and completely let them down.
“I really hope the Minister takes up my invitation and reconsiders this decision – the people of Abergele deserve no less.”
