Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has called on Welsh Government Ministers to support efforts in North Wales to chart the history of Jewish communities in the region.
Speaking in this week’s Business Statement, Darren outlined the ongoing work in the region to raise awareness of the rich, but often unknown, Jewish history, among both Jews and non-Jews, in the area and asked what the Welsh Government is doing to promote it.
He said:
“This week is Holocaust Remembrance Week so I want to raise the work that is ongoing in North Wales to try to chart the history of Jewish communities in the region.
“That work, which involves the development of Jewish history trails is being led by Professor Nathan Abrams of Bangor University, and he's already undertaken a great deal of work in Anglesey, Gwynedd and other pockets of the region.
“In order complete the project across tbe whole of the region, around £50,000 is needed. Can I ask for a statement from the appropriate Welsh Government Minister on our Jewish heritage here in Wales and what action is being taken in order to promote it, particularly in the North Wales region?”
Responding, the Trefnydd, Lesley Griffiths MS, said
“I am aware of the work that you referred to that's going on in North Wales, and I will certainly speak to my colleague Jane Hutt, who would be the Minister with responsibility, to see if she and her officials are aware of that work. It just sounds excellent work, and I will make sure the Minister is aware of that.”
Following the exchange, Darren wrote to the Minister for Faith Communities to request the financial support to complete the project.
