Clwyd West MS Darren Millar is supporting a historic Colwyn Bay church in its quest to secure funding to improve facilities.
Earlier this week Darren visited St Paul’s, a Grade II listed building in the heart of Colwyn Bay, to hear more about plans to improve the amenities at the building.
The proposed works will install toilets, a kitchen, serving hatches, new storage facilities and a new main entrance. Those involved in the plans hope the improvements will enable the church to stay open longer to both serve the local community and attract more tourists.
The church is currently consulting with the community about the proposed changes in St Paul’s before they approach funders, and Darren was pleased to put forward his ideas during his visit.
Speaking afterwards, he said:
“St Paul’s is a historic, beautiful Church and a real asset to Colwyn Bay.
“There are currently no inside toilets and the only source of water is a small sink in the vestry which makes it difficult to host large events.
“The Church is very keen for the local community to have an input in the changes and are currently circulating a questionnaire to gather ideas.
“They are really keen to make better use of the church building during the week and for it to become more of a community asset.
“They are currently looking to convert the space in the bottom of the Tower into toilets and to create a kitchen in the space in which the font is presently housed. They hope the works will help the church to also serve as a tourist attraction, especially in wet weather. Given its key location in the town and how beautiful it is, I am confident that this could be a way forward.
“The church is open to any ideas and suggestions from the public.
“I have offered to help them progress their plans in any way I can and look forward to revisiting in the future when all the changes have been made.”
