A decision to scrap a multi-million-pound bypass project in North Wales has been criticised by the Welsh Conservatives.
Labour ministers in Cardiff Bay announced today that they “will not support any further work on the current Llanbedr Access Road scheme.”
The Welsh Government froze all road building schemes in June this year while it launched a review looking into more environmentally friendly options.
Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Transport, Natasha Asghar MS, said:
“There have been serious concerns and questions over Labour’s knee-jerk decision to stop all road building in Wales, and we have been against it from the outset.
“This latest decision to stop the Llanbedr Access Road will leave people fearful that other road projects, which would be a huge benefit to people’s lives and our economy, will not take shape.
“It is important that details of the ‘alternative package of measures’ to address traffic in the area are made public as soon as possible.”
Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for North Wales, Darren Millar MS, added:
“Traffic in this area is an absolute nightmare and many people saw this access road as a way out of motoring misery.
“It is a particularly bitter pill to swallow given that some road projects are still going ahead in South Wales, while schemes in North Wales are being binned.
“I am sure many residents will be extremely disappointed with this decision by the Labour administration in Cardiff Bay. It is a real kick in the teeth.”
