After recently calling on Local Authorities in North Wales to do more to support families from Afghanistan, Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed yesterday’s announcement from Denbighshire County Council that it will be helping more evacuees from the country.
Denbighshire County Council will now offer support to five families following the recent events in Afghanistan.
The Council’s Cabinet has agreed to increase its current commitment through the Global Resettlement Scheme, to 10 families, enabling the Council to offer housing and support to five Afghan families at this time.
This could be extended if the situation and the scheme continues past the first year.
Welcoming the news, Darren said:
“Just two weeks ago I urged Welsh Councils to work with the Welsh Government to be more generous with the accommodation being provided as part of the resettlement scheme and I am therefore delighted that Denbighshire County Council have committed to helping more families from Afghanistan.
“Our country has a proud history of offering sanctuary to those in need and it is crucial that we are there for the people of Afghanistan.
“I am really thankful to Denbighshire Council’s cabinet for agreeing to provide this additional support and hope that other local authorities in North Wales follow their lead.”
