Community shops in Conwy and Denbighshire have been praised by Welsh Conservative Candidate in this week’s Senedd elections, Darren Millar, for the vital role they have played throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
Darren said the shops, many in rural locations, have been “an absolute lifeline” to residents over the past 14 months, particularly the elderly and vulnerable and those living alone.
He said:
“Community shops are vital for rural areas and are a lifeline for many, but never more so that during the pandemic.
“A large proportion of people have been afraid to visit large supermarkets over the last year, so these shops have been needed more than ever.
“As well as providing the essential goods people need on a daily basis, they are a real hub of the local community and for some during the pandemic, their visit to the community shop has been the only human interaction they have had.
“On the campaign trail, it has been great to be able to revisit some of the community shops in the constituency and to see that they are still thriving.
“Last week, I called into Siop Pwllglas near Ruthin, which I had the pleasure of opening back in 2013.
“Since that time it has gone from strength to strength thanks to a fantastic team of volunteers. I wish to thank them, and all those involved in other community shops in Clwyd West, and urge people to continue supporting them beyond the pandemic."
