Clwyd West MS Darren Millar and those leading a campaign to promote safer driving among first-year drivers following the tragic death of a Denbighshire teenager have met with one of UK’s largest car insurance companies to discuss the campaign’s calls.
Olivia Alkir was killed in a horrific crash on the B5105 between Ruthin and Clawddnewydd in 2019.
Following her death the ‘Olivia’s Legacy’ campaign was established by her best friend Joe Hinchcliffe, who was a witness of the accident, calling for all new drivers to be required to have a black box fitted to their vehicle for the first year after they pass their test and a limit on the number of passengers they can carry to one, in order to promote safer driving.
Darren has been helping to push the campaign and last week met with Admiral to discuss its calls, along with Olivia’s mum, Jo Alkir, and best friend, Joe Hinchcliffe.
The Admiral Group is based in South Wales and is one of the UK’s largest car insurance providers with brands such as Admiral, Bell, Diamond and elephant.co.uk. It employs over 7,500 people in its Cardiff, Swansea and Newport offices, as well as having brands and employees outside of the UK.
Commenting after the meeting, Darren said:
“We discussed our calls for black boxes to be required for all new drivers for the first 12 months after they pass their test and for a limit on the number of passengers that new drivers can carry.
“Admiral listened carefully to our calls and explained its support for Graduated Driver licences and its efforts to improve road safety via the use of telematics devices.
“It was a very productive meeting and we were extremely grateful for Admiral taking the time to hear about the campaign.
“Olivia was only 17 years old when she died and unless the measures this campaign is calling for are implemented, we will sadly lose many more young people unnecessarily.”
