Clwyd West Welsh Conservative candidate for the Senedd elections, Darren Millar, is calling on the Welsh Government to allow residential outdoor education centres to reopen.
Whilst a number of activities have been able to resume, the First Minister has failed to provide any timeline for the reopening of outdoor education centres, despite England and Scotland both doing so.
The centres have been closed for 13 months and are desperate for some clarity.
Darren said:
“It seems ludicrous that “organised outdoor activities for the development and wellbeing of children” with no limit on numbers is allowed, yet a class of children, already in a bubble, cannot attend outdoor education centres.
“It is a proven fact that children can learn more in a week's residential than they do in a whole term at school. not to mention the additional benefits of increased confidence, self esteem and resilience.
“With outdoor learning being included in the new Welsh curriculum you would have thought that the Welsh Government would be keen to reopen the centres to allow our children to benefit from all they have to offer.
“Instead, they have ignored repeated pleas from this educational sector and our children are missing out as a result.
“I therefore call on the First Minister and his colleagues to consider the well-being and development of our young people and to review their stance on this.”
