Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has criticised the Labour Welsh Government for going back on its promise to carry out much-needed improvements on a dangerous stretch of road in Denbighshire.
Darren has been pushing Ministers in Cardiff Bay to carry out roadworks on the A494 Maesgamedd junction.
He worked with Gwyddelwern Community Council and Cllr Hugh Evans for many years to try to move the project forward and was delighted when in February 2020 they were told by the Welsh Government that work should be undertaken by the end of March 31st 2021.
However, following such promises, the start date was repeatedly kicked back. The project has now been dealt a further blow with it being revealed in yesterday’s published final report of the independent Roads Review as one of a number of road projects across Wales that have been scrapped by the Welsh Government.
Speaking in yesterday’s meeting of the Welsh Parliament, Darren criticised the decision and urged Ministers to reconsider.
He told the Minister:
“The Maes Gamedd junction, in Gwyddelwern, is a project that has been promised for well over a decade, with you and your predecessors giving me answers to written questions, saying that the work would proceed.
“It's a dangerous junction, which needs to be addressed, and the local community will be looking to you to find out why on earth this road safety improvement has been axed.”
Speaking afterwards, he said:
“It is absolutely disgraceful that the Welsh Government think scrapping vital road schemes is ok. These works are desperately needed on this stretch of the A494 because it is dangerous and is putting lives at risk.
“Up until this announcement, Ministers were in agreement that improvements were needed. To now go back on their word and ditch the scheme completely is totally irresponsible and I have called on the Minister to come to North Wales to see for himself the risks this road poses. Hopefully he will take up my offer and begin to understand why the decision to not carry out this scheme, makes no sense at all.”
Cllr Hugh Evans said:
"It is gravely disappointing that the Welsh Government has gone back on its promise to residents who have been expressing their concerns about this stretch of road for years.
"Our repeated warnings that someone will be seriously injured or killed unless improvements are made, have clearly been ignored."
