Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed news than over £400,000 has been allocated for a flood relief scheme in Abergele.
The Eldon Drive area of the town has been prone to flooding for years, and Darren first raised concerns with the County Council in 2011.
On Friday, the Welsh Government announced that it will provide £36million to Local Authorities and Natural Resources Wales to help them invest in new defences, maintenance works and natural flood management schemes, and the Eldon Drive scheme is amongst those set to benefit.
Welcoming the news, Darren said:
“Residents living in this part of Abergele have been raising concerns about flooding for years and I first raised their concerns with the Council back in 2011 following a flood event.
“I am therefore delighted that £405,103 has been allocated for these much needed flood alleviation works, which will include the construction of two bridges over an existing open watercourse, a newly created lagoon and associated drainage works.
“Residents will be very relieved that these measures to protect their homes can finally be carried out.”
Griffiths Civil Engineering and Construction have been appointed by Conwy County Borough Council to carry out the works, with planning permission granted just before Christmas.
Leader of Conwy County County, Cllr Sam Rowlands, said:
“Flooding in this area of Abergele has been a concern for a number of years, so this scheme is very much needed and will provide peace of mind to many residents in Abergele for years to come.”
