Clwyd West MS Darren Millar is calling on the Welsh Government to undertake an urgent review of highway safety in Pwllglas, near Ruthin, including consideration of a reduction in the speed limit to 30mph.
Darren recently met with representatives from North Wales Police, Pwllglas Community Council and local businesses, including a local nursery owner, to discuss road safety concerns on the A494 trunk road in the village.
The community is developing a new ‘fun and fitness’ park in the village for local residents and visitors of all ages to enjoy. The new facility is on the east side of the trunk road while most of the local community live on the west side of the road which makes access difficult and dangerous, particularly for young children and those with mobility issues.
The current speed limit on the trunk road through the village is 40mph but many motorists exceed these speeds.
In a bid to resolve the problem, Darren has started a petition calling on the Welsh Government to install a pedestrian crossing in the village.
He has also written to the Transport Minister to request an urgent review of highway safety in the village.
Darren said:
“It is great news that the village is soon set to benefit from a new fun and fitness park, however getting to it is going to be problematic and put lives at risk.
“The speed at which motorists are travelling along this stretch has become a real concern for locals and something needs to be done about it before there is a serious accident.
“I am therefore calling one the Welsh Government to undertake an urgent review of highway safety in Pwllglas, including consideration of a reduction in the speed limit to 30mph. I have also asked the Transport Minister to consider the possibility of installing a pedestrian crossing in the village.
“Without such action it will only be a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed. We simply cannot continue putting lives at risk.”
