Clwyd West Welsh Conservative candidate for the Senedd elections, Darren Millar, is calling on Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to urgently review the restrictions it currently has in place on its maternity wards.
Despite there being a relaxing of covid rules on some maternity wards in Wales, and in England, there has been no change to the restrictions in North Wales.
Women are allowed a birth partner once they are in active labour and for the birth, but not for assessments or induction of labour, and visiting is still restricted.
With many people now vaccinated and covid cases at an all time low in the region, Darren is calling for the restrictions to be eased.
He said:
“Giving birth during the pandemic has been a daunting prospect for many women as they have not been able to have their birth partners with them for the duration of their labour.
“Hospitals in some parts of Wales and England have now changed the rules so that they can have support at every stage of labour, and are even allowing visitors.
“Whilst I agree the restrictions were necessary earlier on in the pandemic, we are in a completely different position now and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board needs to consider this and look at easing the restrictions as soon as possible."
