Clwyd West MS Darren Millar and North Wales MS Sam Rowlands have raised concerns regarding a dangerous level crossing in Towyn with Network Rail.
The MSs visited Ty Gwyn Level Crossing on Friday to discuss railway safety in North Wales with Christine Booth, Network Rail's Operations Risk Advisor for Level Crossings in Wales, and raised their concerns regarding this particular crossing where there have been two deaths in recent years.
Commenting after the meeting, Darren said:
“This is an extremely dangerous crossing and I have been pushing for a bridge to improve safety while maintaining access to the beach for local residents and visitors.
“It was therefore good to meet with Christine to re-emphasise the desperate need for safety measures at the crossing.
“We have sadly already lost two people at this level crossing and we need to do everything we possibly can to ensure there are no further fatalities or accidents.”
Sam said:
“The Ty Gwyn Level Crossing is well used by local and holidaymakers, but it is a real danger as the two fatalities at the crossing have shown.
“Figures published last year showed that since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been more than 400 serious incidents at level crossings in Wales.
“Network Rail have invested in a wide-ranging programme, working with national and local organisations, to make level crossings safer and to help people use them correctly, which I very much welcome, but with regards Ty Gwyn more needs to be done to ensure the safety of all those using it so it was good to have the opportunity to meet with Network Rail to discuss possible solutions.”
When you’re using a level crossing, remember to:
- read the warning signs and follow the instructions carefully
- if you’re on a bike, dismount and walk
- supervise children and animals
- stop, look both ways and listen
- when the line is clear, cross quickly without running (keep looking and listening)
- if there is a gate, always close it behind you.
